| THE
NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE SYSTEM
The Arctic National
Wildlife Refuge is an integral part of the 95 million acre
National Wildlife Refuge System.
Larger than the National
Park System, the Refuge System is America's only system
of protected lands singularly devoted to wildlife
protection and is essential for maintaining America's
wildlife legacy for future generations. The Refuge System
protects not only arctic ecosystems – it includes
deserts, tropical islands, coastal marshes, and native
prairies. With at least one national wildlife refuge in
every U.S. state and territory, many within an hour's
drive of major cities, refuges provide a great opportunity
to get out and experience wildlife.
The Arctic National
Wildlife Refuge is one of America's 10 Most Endangered
National Wildlife Refuges. The Refuge System is
chronically underfunded, and individual refuges face a
litany of challenges to their wildlife conservation
mission. Learn more about the Refuge System and the 10
Most Endangered National Wildlife Refuges.
